"To create a world where science and technology are celebrated... where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes"Dean Kamen, FIRST Founder
FIRST is an acronym for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.” It was founded in 1989 in order to excite young people's interest and increase their participation in science and technology. They put on several programs to encourage youth to pursue education and career opportunities in the engineering and technology fields.
Creston 904 takes part in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). Each year, FRC challenges announces a new game which the student/mentor teams to solve a common problem in a six-week time frame. Each team is supplied a standard Kit-of-Parts out of which they can make a basic, functioning robot—but where's the fun in that? Each team creates their own, unique robot allowing the students an invaluable real-world professional experience.
The teams then pit their robots against each others at lively competitions that bring participants as much excitement as conventional varsity tournaments.
But scoring points is a secondary goal. During the Awards Ceremony at each competition, teams are rewarded for their team spirit, excellence in design, and gracious professionalism. For FIRST teams, winning means building partnerships that last.
